Revolutionary War Alphabet Books Bring Learning to Life at Paige Elementary
At Paige Elementary Community School, Brittany DuQuette’s fifth grade students had the opportunity to become published authors thanks to a classroom grant. Through the Revolutionary War Alphabet Books project, students across three classes each received a hardcover copy of a book they helped create, blending history, research, and writing into a memorable hands-on experience.
How the Project Worked
This project brought the American Revolution alive in the classroom by pairing social studies content with the writing process. Each student was randomly assigned a letter, selected a Revolutionary War topic starting with that letter, conducted research, organized their findings, drafted and revised their writing, and collaborated with both peers and teachers to refine their work before publication. This approach not only built writing skills but also deepened understanding of an important period in American history.
Student Successes and Pride in Publishing
Seeing their work published in book form inspired excitement and pride. Students were more engaged, motivated to revise, and eager to share their finished pages with classmates and family. The process also reinforced the importance of planning, feedback, and the belief that their voices matter.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
Like all meaningful projects, there were challenges. With three classes producing books, time became a constraint—some students were absent near publishing deadlines, and others needed more time to complete their pages. As a result, a few book pages included errors that couldn’t be fixed before printing. These challenges became valuable learning moments, prompting ideas for next year such as more flexible scheduling, extra support groups, and enrichment activities for early finishers.
Celebration Day
The project will culminate in a celebration, inviting fifth grade families to see all three published books. Students will receive their hardcover copies and celebrate like true authors, signing each other’s books to mark this achievement. This is a day that students are really looking forward to, their excitement is contagious.
